The area that is now Palo Alto was inhabited by the Ohlone people before
Spanish explorers came in the 18
th century. The Spanish named the settlement Palo Alto, or "tall tree,"
after a large redwood tree that served as a landmark. Jane and Leland
Stanford Sr. founded Stanford University in 1891 and Palo Alto was formally
incorporated in 1894.
Today, Palo Alto is home to about 65,000 people. The city is perhaps best
known as the home of Stanford University, widely regarded as one of the
best universities in the country. Palo Alto is also heavily involved in
the high-tech industry; Hewlett-Packard, Skype, and Tesla Motors all have
headquarters in the city.

San Jose is now known as the capital of Silicon Valley and home to a number
of thriving tech companies—including IBM, eBay, Cisco Systems, and
Adobe Systems. However, the city has humble beginnings as a farming community,
established as the first civil settlement of Alta California. In the early
20th century, the city was a hub of innovation, and the regional economy
made a big shift from agriculture to manufacturing during WWII.
Following the war, the city began to boom as an urbanized metropolitan
area throughout the 1950s and 60s. Today, San Jose is the largest city
in the Bay Area as home to nearly one million residents. It is also notably
one of the most affluent cities in the area due in large part to the presence
of many high-paying employers, many of which are some of the biggest names
in the tech industry.
